Green Bay Packers: Trading Up for a Pass Rusher?

Ever since the Green Bay Packer’s General Manager Ted Thompson has been in office he has been known for two things: his best player available draft strategy and building the Green Bay Packers strictly through the NFL Draft. He is not known for his free agent acquisitions and since 2005, when Thompson became the GM of the Green Bay Packers, has only pulled the trigger on two well known free agents: Charles Woodson the All-Pro Cornerback who won Defensive Player of the Year with the Packers in 2009, and Ryan Pickett, a veteran at the defensive end position.

Although it would not fit the usual mold of a Green Bay Packers Draft, is it possible that Ted Thompson and the Green Bay Packers trade up in this draft for a legitimate pass rusher?

1) The Green Bay Packers were one of the worst teams in the NFL last season when it came to sacks. Due to the lack of this pass rush, the Green Bay Packer’s secondary was torched all season long. It all starts with the front seven. If any team gives any quarterback enough time in the pocket, the quarterback is obviously going to be successful. I don’t care if its Drew Brees, or Andy Dalton, the quarterbacks in this league are professionals and if given time in the pocket, they WILL produce. With that being said, I believe Green Bay’s main priority in this off-season is to draft a pass rusher in the first round.

2) The ideal player the Packers could trade up and draft would be Courtney Upshaw the Outside Linebacker from Alabama. He is the number one prospect at the outside linebacker position and as of right now is a Top 15 prospect on many draft boards. He has shown great instincts and he has never suffered a significant injury. Quinton Coples the Defensive End out of North Carolina might be too much of a reach for the Packers and I do not believe they would target him. Another name that can be thrown in the mix is Defensive End Melvin Ingram out of South Carolina.

3) If the Packers decide to stay put at 28 keep these names in mind: Andre Branch, Ronnell Lewis, Nick Perry, Whitney Mercilus.
